WHAT ARE ELECTROLYTES?

Electrolytes are minerals that help your body function properly. They’re found naturally in food and drinks, and they play an important role in things like fluid balance, muscle function and nerve signalling.

You’ve probably heard of them in connection with sports drinks. But electrolytes aren’t just for athletes. Your body uses them every day.

So, what exactly are electrolytes?

The main electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.

They carry an electrical charge when dissolved in fluid, which is where the name comes from. Your body uses these minerals for a range of essential processes, including maintaining fluid balance and supporting normal muscle and nerve function.

You naturally lose electrolytes throughout the day, particularly through sweat. How much you lose depends on things like temperature, activity level and how much you sweat.

Where do electrolytes come from?

Electrolytes are found naturally in many foods and drinks.

Fruit and vegetables can provide potassium and magnesium. Dairy products contain calcium. Salt is a source of sodium. Coconut water naturally contains several electrolytes, including potassium and magnesium.

This is one reason coconut water has become such an interesting base for hydration drinks.

Do you need an electrolyte drink?

It depends on the situation.

For everyday hydration, water and a balanced diet are usually enough for most people. But there are moments when an electrolyte drink can make sense—after sweating, during hot weather, while travelling, after physical activity, or simply when you want something more than plain water.

The important thing is to look beyond the front of the pack.

Some electrolyte drinks are heavily sweetened or contain artificial sweeteners and a long list of added ingredients. Others take a simpler approach.

A different approach to electrolytes

At Hydrate, we start with coconut water and build from there.

Hydrate is electrolyte-infused coconut water with real fruit, created to make hydration taste as good as the moment deserves. Our sparkling range combines coconut water with ingredients such as sea salt and magnesium, alongside real fruit flavours.

It’s not designed to be another neon sports drink.

It’s coconut water, electrolytes and real flavour—made for the moments between two breaths.

The takeaway

Electrolytes aren’t a trend or a special ingredient reserved for athletes. They’re minerals your body already uses every day.

What matters is understanding where they come from and choosing a drink that fits the moment—and the ingredients you actually want to put into your body.
