ELECTROLYTE DRINKS WITHOUT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

“Electrolyte drink” doesn’t tell you everything you need to know.

Two drinks can both contain electrolytes while having completely different ingredients, flavours and nutritional profiles.

If you’re looking for an electrolyte drink without artificial sweeteners, the best place to start is the label.

Why are sweeteners used?

Many electrolyte drinks are designed to deliver a very specific taste while keeping sugar low.

One way to do that is with high-intensity sweeteners.

Depending on the product, these can include ingredients such as sucralose, acesulfame K or aspartame.

There’s nothing mysterious about this—they’re simply tools used to create sweetness without adding much sugar.

But not everyone wants them in their drinks.

That’s why it’s worth looking at what is actually in the can rather than relying on claims on the front.

Read the ingredient list

If you’re looking for an electrolyte drink without artificial sweeteners, check the ingredients rather than simply looking for words like “natural” or “healthy”.

The ingredient list should tell you whether the product contains sweeteners such as sucralose, acesulfame K or aspartame.

It’s also worth looking at the nutrition panel.

A drink can contain no artificial sweeteners and still contain added sugar. “No artificial sweeteners” and “no added sugar” are two different claims.

What about naturally occurring sugar?

Coconut water naturally contains sugar.

That’s not the same thing as adding sugar to a drink.

If coconut water is one of the main ingredients, some of the sugar shown on the nutrition panel will naturally come from the coconut itself.

Again, the ingredient list gives you the context.

How Hydrate approaches it

Hydrate starts with coconut water and real fruit.

Our sparkling range contains no artificial sweeteners and no added sugar. The sweetness you taste comes from the ingredients themselves, including the naturally occurring sugars in coconut water and fruit.

We also keep the ingredient list deliberately straightforward.

Coconut water, Real fruit and Electrolytes, that’s pretty much it.

No need to make hydration complicated.

Does “without artificial sweeteners” mean better?

Not necessarily.

It simply describes what’s in the product.

The right drink depends on what you’re looking for, what you enjoy and the occasion.

But if avoiding artificial sweeteners is important to you, it’s a useful filter when choosing an electrolyte drink.

And once you’ve filtered the ingredient list, there’s one more test:

Does it actually taste good?

We think that’s pretty important too.
