COCONUT WATER VS. SPORTS DRINKS

For years, sports drinks have dominated the hydration aisle.

Bright colours. Big bottles. Electrolytes. A strong connection to exercise. But hydration has moved beyond the sports field.

Today, there are more ways to hydrate—and coconut water is one of them.

What is a sports drink?

Traditional sports drinks are generally formulated around fluid, carbohydrates and electrolytes.

They’re designed with physical activity in mind, particularly situations where you are sweating and using up energy.

Depending on the product, they can contain significant amounts of sugar, artificial sweeteners, colours, acids and flavourings.

But the category has changed.

There are now sports drinks, electrolyte waters, powders, tablets, coconut-water drinks and a growing range of products that sit somewhere between hydration and everyday refreshment.

What makes coconut water different?

Coconut water starts with a naturally occurring ingredient rather than a formulated sports-drink base.

It’s the liquid inside young coconuts and naturally contains minerals including potassium and magnesium.

It also has a naturally light sweetness. That gives coconut water a very different starting point from a traditional sports drink.

A different approach to hydration

For a long time, hydration was almost synonymous with sports drinks.

The formula was familiar: bright colours, sweet flavours and a functional promise built around exercise.

But the way people think about hydration is changing.

You don’t have to be running a marathon to care about what you drink. And a hydration drink doesn’t need to look or taste like something designed exclusively for the sports field.

Today, people are looking for drinks that fit into more of their lives—after a Pilates class, on a hot afternoon, after a swim, while travelling, or simply when they want something refreshing.

That’s where a different generation of hydration drinks comes in.

Hydrate sits somewhere in between

Hydrate starts with coconut water and combines it with electrolytes, real fruit and carbonation.

It’s designed to be refreshing enough for everyday life while still bringing an electrolyte component to the drink.

And importantly, it doesn’t try to look like a traditional sports drink.

There are no fluorescent colours or “sports fuel” aesthetic.

Just coconut water, real ingredients and a little fizz.

Hydration doesn’t have to look like a workout

This is the bigger shift we see.

People aren’t only thinking about hydration when they’re exercising.

They’re thinking about what they drink when they travel, work, relax, go to a sauna, spend time outside, take a class or simply move through a busy day.

The occasion has changed.

And the drinks are changing with it.

That’s where we think coconut water has an interesting place.

The Hydrate idea

Take a different path.

Because there are more ways to hydrate than there used to be.

And sometimes the right drink is the one that feels less like a sports drink—and more like something you genuinely want to reach for.
